Mega expands offering to include mobile phone subscriptions

  • Mega intends to offer “the same level of mobile connectivity, but at a more affordable price point”.
  • “As a product, mobile phone subscriptions are very similar to energy contracts”.
  • Mega wants to help families control their monthly outgoings, not just their energy bills.

Leuven, Liège, 1 February 2024 – Mega, the largest Belgian supplier of gas and primarily green electricity, is launching a new service. Mega will offer mobile phone subscriptions that have the same excellent mobile connectivity as other providers, but for a more budget-friendly price. Mega intends to chart its own course with unique features when it comes to mobile telephone. In addition, Mega Telecom is launching a mobile app to help families to keep their monthly outgoings under control.

“We’ve always intended to diversify our activities”, said Thomas Coune, Mega’s CEO. “As entrepreneurs, we’re bound to feel the urge now and again to launch something new. We’ve already expanded our energy activities geographically and today we offer energy contracts in the Netherlands as well as Belgium. We’re now launching a new offering which, in terms of flow and management, is a very good fit with our existing activities as an energy supplier. Our intention is that, in time, our telecom division will become just as important as our energy division”, Thomas Coune explained.

Mega’s mobile phone subscriptions are the only ones to combine two key features:

  • Customers can easily control their outgoings. They can effortlessly block and unblock different types of usage and set budget limits for each subscription. Customers can also set up plenty of usage warnings – many more than the number required by law – to ensure they never exceed their own monthly budget.
  • Families that purchase energy and also have a mobile phone subscription receive a combination discount, which is an additional discount on their mobile phone subscriptions. This will make mobile telephony even more affordable for families.

Mega is also taking advantage of synergies with its energy division in order to make the most of its streamlined processes and working methods for mobile phone subscriptions as well energy contracts. This is just one of the reasons why its energy contracts and mobile phone subscriptions are more affordably priced.

Mobile phone subscriptions and energy contracts are similar products

Mega wants to help families control their monthly outgoings. Mobile phone subscriptions have become commodities that hardly vary in terms of quality, just like energy contracts. This means competition focuses on price and features. Mobile phone subscriptions have become a recurring cost item for families. In many families parents are not the only ones with a subscription, as large numbers of teens and younger children have their own subscriptions too.

Low-cost player Mega has invested heavily in digitalising its new offering. When it comes to energy contracts and mobile phone subscriptions, there are many similarities in the overall way of working and various processes. That is why Mega decided adding mobile phone subscriptions to its energy contracts would be a logical move. Thanks to far-reaching digitalisation, Mega can offer excellent terms and conditions for the subscriptions it sells. Moreover, energy customers receive an additional combination discount on their mobile phone subscriptions.

Mega Telecom offers three different subscriptions:

  • Spark for a monthly price of €12. This plan includes 150 minutes of calls, 150 text messages and 5 GB of mobile data each month.
    Combination discount for customers who also have an energy contract: – €2 per mobile phone subscription.
    Promotional offer for the first three months: €6 per month in combination with an energy contract, or €8 per month for customers who only have a mobile phone subscription.
  • Flash for a monthly price of €17. This plan includes unlimited calls and text messages and 15 GB of mobile data each month.
    Combination discount for customers who also have an energy contract: – €2 per mobile phone subscription.
    Promotional offer for the first six months: €11 per month in combination with an energy contract, or €13 per month for customers who only have a mobile phone subscription.
  • Star for a monthly price of €27. This plan includes unlimited calls and text messages and 60 GB of mobile data each month.
    Combination discount for customers who also have an energy contract: – €2 per mobile phone subscription.
    Promotional offer for the first six months: €17 per month in combination with an energy contract, or €19 per month for customers who only have a mobile phone subscription.

A mobile app for managing your mobile phone subscriptions

When it launches its mobile phone offering, Mega will also introduce its ‘myMega’ mobile app for managing mobile phone subscriptions. This app allows customers to monitor and adjust everything themselves on their mobile phone or PC:

  • Monitoring usage and budget;
  • Viewing bills;
  • Changing subscriptions, for instance by adding or removing options;
  • Ordering additional subscriptions;
  • Using track and trace to follow orders, such as changes to a subscription’s selected options, in a similar way to web stores.

A sister company for the energy division

Mega Telecom is a separate company within the Mega group. It has its own management team and a dedicated helpdesk team staffed by 20 people. This number is set to grow in line with the activities.

Mega’s telephony partners

The Orange network is used for Mega’s phone subscriptions. Mega’s mobile phone customers will enjoy the same mobile connectivity as Orange customers, and will also benefit from the technological evolution of the Orange network. Mega uses, among other things, the tried and tested platform of Transatel, one of Europe’s leading MVNO enablers, for processing phone call data (as input for billing).

About Mega

Mega is a low-cost supplier of energy to private individuals and professionals, and a low-cost supplier of mobile phone subscriptions to families and SMEs. The company, which has its registered office in Liège, was established in 2013 by two Belgian entrepreneurs: Michaël Corhay and Thomas Coune.

Mega Energy (Power Online nv) concludes contracts directly with local producers of renewable energy (such as solar and wind energy) and is also active on energy exchanges as a buyer. It is the largest Belgian energy supplier and the fifth largest energy supplier in the market.

Mega Telecom offers mobile phone subscriptions throughout Belgium under the Mega Telecom brand. It offers its own subscription formulas as well as a mobile app. This app gives families control over their monthly outgoings, which is essential given how much mobile phone bills matter to today’s families.

Currently, the Mega group has some 140 employees, who work at its offices in Liège, Leuven and Rotterdam (Netherlands).
